Africa Day

May 24, 2024

Every May 25 we celebrate Africa Day, a date that commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), today known as the African Union (AU). This day is not only a reminder of the spirit of unity, struggle and solidarity that characterizes African peoples, but also offers us an opportunity to reflect on the rich cultural, social and spiritual legacy of the continent.

Since the Daughters of Jesus arrived in Cabo Delgado, almost 20 years ago, we have sought to be the face of Jesus in the tasks we carry out and in the way we live with the people. Currently, there is a small group of sisters in Mozambique distributed between Maputo, Metoro and Pemba. On a day-to-day basis, they collaborate in the work of the bishops’ conference, in the dioceses and parishes. With the help of FASFI, they promote different projects at the Girassol de Metoro school, the high school and the alternative health center.

This country, located in the southern part and on the east coast of Africa, has a diversified culture, marked by the joy and colorfulness of the capulanas, the typical fabric used for clothing. His vitality permeates everyone who enters here and we Daughters of Jesus will always have something of him.

On a day like today, we recall the words of our Superior General during her Canonical Visit to this country:

What a life to be thankful for, what a testimony our sisters offer! At some point, I felt that we all had to go through Africa, to feel the external effects of poverty, to share the fate of a people who suffer, who have a capacity for resilience, so necessary today, and who are able to celebrate and celebrate in everyday life.

Happy Africa Day!
