Do you want to know the origin of this holiday?

The name Jesus, meaning “God saves,” was a common name in first-century Judaism. However, this name will take on its true meaning in the concrete figure of Jesus of Nazareth, inasmuch as he is truly the saving power of God. So much so that the name of Mary’s Son will be imposed from on high: “Behold, you will conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (Lk. 1:31).

During the Council of Lyons in 1274, Pope Gregory X issued a Bull aimed at redressing the insults against the Name of Jesus: “We have prescribed to the faithful… to reverence in a particular way that Name which is above all names…”.

In the 14th century its liturgical cult flourished. St. Bernardine of Siena, a great devotee, already sketches an IHS to express his love for the NAME OF JESUS.

In 1530, Pope Clement VII granted the Franciscan Order the celebration of his Feast. The companions of Ignatius of Loyola congregate in “Society of Jesus” 1534. The name of JESUS, IHS, seal of the Superior General. It is also the emblem of the whole Society, sign and motive of its action for the Kingdom, at the service of the Church.

The feast was instituted in 1721 and later suppressed for a time in the Roman calendar until it was restored by Pope St. John Paul II. With the revision of the universal calendar in 1996, it was changed from January 1 to January 3.
