On September 1, 2026, the Spain-Italy Province took a step that had been in the works for months: it officially became the Europe-Africa Province, comprising Spain, Italy, and Mozambique. A new era is dawning, born of the desire to continue responding, together, to humanity’s most pressing cries.
Something new is sprouting
In May, our Superior General, Graciela Francovig, announced in her circular letter No. 53 the incorporation of the community in Mozambique —located in the Diocese of Inhambane—into what was then the Spain-Italy Province.
From Andoain, in the midst of her canonical visit, the provincial superior, María del Mar Domínguez López, fi, wrote in her circular letter No. 8:
“Something new is springing up—don’t you see it?” (Is 43:19)… We are reorganizing ourselves in a different way to “continue responding to humanity’s most pressing cries.” But it is not just a matter of organization, dear sisters; it is, above all, a matter of conversion—a “spiritual renewal and a genuine openness to the newness of recognizing and supporting God’s action in our present” (Det. XIX,39).
A period of transition was then beginning—a time to pray for one another and, with a universal spirit, broaden the province’s horizons.
A name with an eye toward the future
Over the past few months, the sisters were asked for suggestions on a name for this new entity. Following discussions between the general government and the provincial government, in August the Superior General, Graciela Francovig, announced the final choice in her circular letter No. 55:
We chose Europe-Africa. We felt that geography was the criterion that best defined this province—just as it does for other provinces—and that it offers opportunities for the future.
Since September, a new reality
Since September 1, 2026, Spain, Italy, and Mozambique have been moving forward together under a single name and a single provincial project. A province that is young in its structure but heir to a long history.
We give thanks to God for everyone’s willingness to make this new life possible, and we accompany the Europe-Africa Province with our prayers as it begins this journey. May the Spirit, who always gives life, guide every step of this journey that begins today.
