We continue to walk in this Holy Week. After having entered with Jesus on Palm Sunday, welcoming his humility; after learning on Monday to love without calculation and to care for the fragile; and after allowing ourselves to be looked at on Tuesday with truth in order to transform the heart, today the journey places us before a harsher reality: the fragility of our bonds.
Betrayal and distance also appear in the story of Jesus. Judas was Jesus’ friend and betrays him. His life reminds us that we too can break relationships, distance ourselves, fail in love. The breakdown of relationships has serious consequences in the immediate environment, in structures, institutions and, as we know, in the whole world.
Today, our world is still wounded by divisions, wars, injustice and mistrust. We live in a world where fraternity is broken (GCXIX). And yet, the Gospel does not stop there: it invites us to rebuild bonds, to reweave trust, to care for the relationships that sustain life.
So, today we sincerely ask ourselves:
What valuable things might I be neglecting or trading for less?
What relationship in my life needs to be cared for or healed?
Where am I called to rebuild relationships?
Perhaps today’s gesture is a courageous and simple step: to reconcile with someone or, at least, to begin by praying for that person. Open a door, even a small one, to fraternity.
And from there, we pray: Lord, make us sowers of fraternity.
